You are Right. It does take a special kind of person to care for people in need. I can remember how nervous I was to take the test. I passed the class and received the certificate. I remember my first patient. We did clinicals in Chapin. She was a demented patient with a poor appetite, however, she would eat her dessert only. And drink sweet tea. She was very resistant with care and could become combative at times. At that time with no kids at the time, me being about 125 pounds with the frail lady with a mean right hook, Why ME?😁. I remember reading her care plan, when you touch her she screams bloody murder, even if its just to reposition or turn her, My God. It was an eye opener to me. Not to mention I had 12 other patients to care for. Thank God we had Dementia training right before that or I would have been saying bump this. I’m out Lol. I mean I figured since she was not diabetic then it would be ok to sprinkle sugar on her food and see what happens….and guess what. She ate everything and gained 10 pounds on my watch😁. I was so proud of that one accomplishment. I told everybody and bragged and bragged. Now that is only one patient. I had my first male and he was huge. I’m talking 400 pounds…..again I am like Why, why, why. He was so not adhering to his diet No Concentrated Sweets 1000 calories a day. I would have to get him the regular meal, an alternate meal for breakfast lunch and dinner and snacks in between. For those that do not know when someone is Alert and Oriented X4 and are deemed Competent, you still have to honor their requests, and Document their non compliance with diet, care, refusals, ect. I enjoyed everything except he became very lazy not wanting to get up and use the rest room😳. And all you can do is encourage the patient to do so that’s it. And you can not refuse to care for them because they are being lazy or that can turn into Abuse-neglect real quick. So that wasn’t my favorite part, But i did enjoy some great conversations and when he did get up, he did do therapy and lost 100 pounds and was sent home. I did feel that I was apart of that weight loss. Sad to say he gained it all back while he was at home and more and had to return. Sometimes it’s like that. As healthcare providers we see a lot of patients with a revolving door. They are in a “controlled” environment and get back out in the “world” and lose control. That’s why I am continuing to be an anchor in the Lord or stay enrooted just like that tree planted in the found so when ever a tornado or hurricane come through, after the storm, IT IS STILL STANDING! I am overflowing my children in the scriptures of Jesus. They all have a bible and I am making sure they are following not necessarily their plan but making sure they follow Jesus Master plan that he has for their life. Amen somebody? I could go on and on telling stories about. my encounters with patients being in healthcare for almost 10 years, I have truly seen and done some miraculous things through Jesus. All Glory Goes to God for allowing me to have the wisdom and patience that is much needed with all patients. In conclusion shout out for all of the good healthcare providers in facilities and in home care settings as well.
